Baseball Men Start Season With Sweep of NC Wesleyan

Eastern Mennonite is off to a successful start in the Ben Spotts era, as the Royals swept a pair of seven-inning games at North Carolina Wesleyan today, 3-0 and 4-3.  EMU is 2-0 and plays a single game at Ferrum College tomorrow afternoon.

EMU 3, NC Wesleyan 0
Senior Daniel Stanley (Henrico, VA/Varina) allowed five hits in the opener while striking out five to shut down the Battling Bishops.  He did not allow more than one hit in an inning and walked only one batter.

Jonathan Estrada (Miami, FL/Doral Academy) had an RBI single in EMU's first at-bat for the 1-0 lead.  Kyle Armstrong (Greenville, VA/Riverheads) and Phillip Jordan (West Point, VA/Christchurch) each had hits in the seventh, as the Royals took advantage of a pair of NWC errors to plate two more runs.

Adam Posey (Poquoson, VA/Poquoson) finished with two of the men's five hits in the opener.

EMU 4, NC Wesleyan 3
The Royals scored in the top of the first in the nightcap as well, with Posey leading off with a single and later touching home on a Battling Bishop error.  EMU had three hits in the third, including B.J. Mortimer's (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) RBI single, to go up 2-0.

Estrada singled in another run in the fifth, but North Carolina Wesleyan got the score right back in the bottom of the frame to make it 3-1.

The home team scored another run in the sixth to get within one.  Brandon Carroll (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) doubled and scored for EMU in the top of the seventh to make it 4-2, and the insurance came in handy.

NC Wesleyan loaded the bases in their last at-bat, and Austin Marzullo (Shippensburg, PA/Shippensburg) took over on the mound.  He struck out the first two batters he saw, but walked the next to allow a run to score.  But a ground ball ended the threat, leaving the Royals with the 4-3 win.

Casey Harlow (Louisa, VA/Louisa County) pitched the first 3.2 innings of the game and earned the win.  Marzullo picked up the save.

Estrada and Mortimer each went 2-4 from the plate with an RBI.

The Royals travel north to continue their season-opening swing at Ferrum.  Game time is at 2:00pm.
