Four home runs between two games was not enough for the Diamond Royals as they dropped both games against Ferrum in their first conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon. EMU falls to 6-9-1 on the season and opens up conference play 0-2.

The Royals return to the field on Wednesday, March 13 when they travel to play Washington and Lee at 4:00pm.

Ferrum 7, EMU 5

The Panthers opened up the first inning scoring three runs highlighted by a two-run home run by Kyle Anstice. Then would score a single run in four separate innings to keep enough of a lead over the Royals.

EMU was in catch-up mode the rest of the game as they scratched a run in both the second and third innings. Billy Quinn (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) hit an RBI single in the second inning that scored Corey Willis (Fredricksburg, Va./Massaponax) who led off the inning with a single. Jaylon Lee (Newport News, Va./Denbigh) started the third inning by hitting his fifth home run of the season for a solo shot.

Tyler McFadden (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) drove in Lee on a RBI double in the fifth inning to make the score 5-3.

EMU made some noise with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning while trailing by four runs. Pinch hitter Blake Sargent (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) got the rally going with a double down the left field line that just stayed inside the baseline. Zach Roberts (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) followed by hitting an RBI single down the left field line then Brett Lindsay (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) hit an RBI single that scored Roberts. A strikeout looking on a close call was the final out of the game.

Connor Lutz (Colonial Beach, Va./Colonial Beach) threw that last 2.2 innings in relief for EMU giving up just one hit and one unearned run while striking out three.

Roberts and Willis both finished with two hits. Lee scored twice and was 1-3 with the home run and two walks.

Ferrum 14, EMU 8

The Royals got on the board in a hurry to start game two as Roberts belted his second home run of the season to left field.

Ferrum responded scoring two runs in the second and third innings on RBI singles and a sacrifice fly.

EMU got one of those runs back in the bottom of the third as Lindsay joined the home run parade by adding a solo homer for his first of the season.

The Panthers added another run in the top of the fourth inning before Sargent scored on an error after getting on base by hitting a double. Three EMU errors in the top of the seventh inning led to three runs for Ferrum.

Lindsay led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single then Lee's second home run of the day went for a two-run blast to get the Royals within three runs.

Five hits in the top of the eighth inning brought six runs across for the Panthers as they increased their lead.

Matt Curry (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) led off the ninth inning with a double which led the way for EMU to load the bases with no outs. The Royals were able to bring in three runs before the third out was recorded.

Lindsay finished 2-5 with a home run and scored twice. Lee was 1-4 and Roberts 1-3 both with a home run and combined for three RBI. Jordan Brake (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt) had four RBIs.
