Royals Improve to 5-2 After Home Sweeps

The Eastern Mennonite men's volleyball team picked up a pair of sweeps at their home opener on Saturday, taking down Lancaster Bible and Gallaudet by 3-0 scores.

The Royals took a bit to get going in game one against LBC, but closed on an 18-10 run to win 25-16.  The Chargers led 13-12 in game two before the men swept out to an identical 25-16 finish.  EMU led 21-15 in game three before LBC tied it at 24-24.  But the Royals closed with the final two points to win 26-24.

Jesse Reist (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey East) had a successful debut in front of the home crowd, as the freshman pounded out a match high 12 kills and had three service aces.  Chris Moise (Hollywood, FL/South Broward) had eight kills and five digs in two games.  Greg Knight (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory) added six kills in two games.  Knight, Kyle Storc (Westerville, OH/Bishop Watterson) and John Barry (Columbus, OH/Worthington Kilbourne) each had four block assists.

Barry finished with 35 set assists.  Travis Riesen (Hillsboro, KS/Hillsboro) topped EMU with six digs.

The Royals were in complete control in the final match of the day, walking away with wins of 25-8, 25-10 and 25-7.

Moise had 12 kills on just 14 attempts.  Reist put down another 11.  Barry had 26 assists.

The men had 12 aces, led by five from Moise and three from Knight.

Now 5-2 on the year, Eastern Mennonite is off until next weekend when play at the CVC Crossover Tournament hosted by Thiel College in Greenville, PA.  The Royals take on Fontbonne and Cazenovia on Saturday, followed by host Thiel on Sunday.
