The EMU basketball women lost a close game to Widener tonight 68-63 in a game that came down to the final minutes.
It only took four seconds into the game for the Royals to begin scoring as Emily McCombs (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) scored her first of a team high 20 points on the night. EMU would battle with the Pride for the rest of the first quarter to gain a 21-17 lead.
The Royals got out to their largest lead of the night in the second quarter when Jess Washington (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) made a layup to give the Royals a 25-17 lead. Widener held the Royals from scoring on their next eight possessions to get the score within one point. EMU carried a 37-33 lead into halftime.
The Pride would take control in the third quarter outscoring the Royals 16-5 to take a 49-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Royals came back from a nine point deficit to tie the game at 60 after a long three-pointer made by Lindsey Krisak (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) with 1:51 left.
After a Widener three-pointer and an EMU turnover, the Pride would go on to make their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Lexi Dean (Elkton, Va./East Rockingham) had 10 points with 7 rebounds and 2 blocks off the bench for the Royals. Kiana Childress (Palmyra, Va./Fluvanna County) did a good job getting to the free throw line converting 5-of-6 attempts. McCombs added seven rebounds and two steals.
Widener shot 33.3% from three-point range (6-18), compared to EMU's 26.1% (6-23), and out-rebounded the Royals 42-38.
This was the first game of the two-day McDaniel Tip-Off Classic in Westminster, Md. as EMU takes on host McDaniel tomorrow at 4:00pm.
