The EMU soccer men lost their season opener to York on Friday by a score of 2-1 that had to be decided in double overtime.

The Spartans struck first in the 14th minute on a long shot from Brook Addisu that soared past the diving keeper and into the top left of the net.

The Royals earned themselves a corner in the 33rd minute, that led to Troy Davis (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) firing off a rocket shot from well outside the box and finding the back of the net on the resulting play to tie the game going into halftime.

The second half was a physical battle that did not allow either team to find an edge as regulation ended tied at one goal apiece.

After a scoreless first 10 minute overtime, York found some space in the middle to finish a crossing pass for a goal and walk away with the game winner. Ahmed Zaatar (Barboursville, Va./William Monroe) finished with five saves for EMU.

The Royals have a quick turnaround as they host William Peace on Saturday at 7:00pm as part of the EMU/Bridgewater Soccer Classic.
