The EMU soccer men fell at home in overtime Wednesday night to Hood by a score of 2-1 after tying the game with just under three minutes to play in regulation. The loss drops the Royals to 2-4 on the young season.
The Blazers got on the board in the 30th minute when Brandon Feuerherd collected a loose ball in front of the goal and put it past the EMU keeper. They would hold the lead going into halftime.
After getting early corner kick opportunities, the Royals gave a strong offensive push late in the game. In the 87th minute, a loose ball bounced away from the Hood goalkeeper and right to the foot of Jonas Beachy (Grants Pass, Ore./Hidden Valley) who tapped the ball into the open goal to tie the game. This would force golden goal overtime.
It only took the Blazers 1:26 into the overtime period before Clay Smith scored the game winner. Hood outshot the Royals 26-15. Ahmed Zaatar (Barboursville, Va./William Monroe) had 12 saves in net for EMU.
Next up for the Royals is a tough test against Messiah on Saturday, September 14 at 7:00pm. This game is a Rowdy Royals Game where all the EMU student athletes will be in attendance.
