The EMU volleyball women suffered a 3-0 setback at ODAC power Washington and Lee Tuesday night. The straight sets decision drops the Royals to 7-16 overall and 2-6 in the ODAC.
A quick reprieve from conference play sends the women to Mary Baldwin on Thursday before Saturday's key ODAC Quad Match in Yoder Arena. EMU plays Guilford at 11:00am and Randolph at 2:00pm, with Bridgewater also playing on the second court in Yoder Arena.
Washington and Lee (14-9/8-1 ODAC) blocked leading attacker Hannah Johnson (Staunton, Va./Wilson Memorial) for the first point of the night, and stuffed her two more times in surging to an 18-3 start. The women answered with an 8-2 run, but would get no closer than nine points in a 25-15 loss.
Eastern Mennonite scored the first points of the second and played much better. Back-to-back kills from Beck Hoskins (Danville, Va./Westover Christian Academy) and Meredith Stinnette (Lynch Station, Va./Altavista) had them within 18-16 before a quick 3-0 jab from W&L gave the home team the space they need for a 25-21 score.
The Generals used a 6-0 run midway through the third to take the momentum to a clinching score of 25-13.
EMU got most of their offense out of the middles, with Maria Yoder (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) and Hoskins combining for 10 kills and no errors on 22 swings. Stinnette and Amy Goodman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) each added four kills in two sets as the only other attackers to finish with a positive attack percentage. Carly Gingerich (Goshen, Ind./Goshen) had 15 assists while Tori Wigley (Elkton, Va./East Rockingham) was good for 10.
Johnson finished with a team high nine digs. Tarynn Clark (Goshen, Ind./Bethany Christian) added seven and EMU's only service ace.
Meg Guignon led Washington and Lee with 15 kills and 11 digs.
