A season after catching a few bad breaks, the EMU volleyball women were picked ninth out of the 13 schools in the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Poll.

The Royals received 48 points in the poll of ODAC coaches, coming in two points ahead of Emory & Henry. Both teams finished 2-10 in conference last season as they finished in a three-way tie with Ferrum just outside of making the ODAC Tournament.

EMU returns sophomore Hannah Johnson (Staunton, Va./Wilson Memorial) who led the team in kills as a freshman. Upperclassmen Amy Goodman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian), Kara Durren (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) and Meredith Stinnette (Lynch Station, Va./Altavista) will also bring offensive experience to a team that graduated three key hitters. The team also returns both setters from last year's 6-2 offense in Carly Gingerich (Goshen, Ind./Goshen) and Tori Wigley (Elkton, Va./East Rockingham), while Ginny Sorrell (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) and Tarynn Clark (Goshen, Ind./Bethany Christian) will anchor the defense.

The Royals open the year with the Route 42 Classic on Aug. 30 and 31, a 10-team invitational co-hosted on three courts on the EMU and Bridgewater College campuses.
